Tea Industry
Tea agriculture is the major industry in Huangshan. A series of measures will be taken to boom the traditional tea economy.
More than 700 thousfarmers are involved in tea growing in a total tea farm lof 700 thousand Chinese mu(about 47 thousand hectares). Of the total tea output , 88.4% is high quality tea. Well-known Teas include:
Taiping Houkui: The earliest production of the tea dates back to 1900. It won a gold medal at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. 1955, it was selected as one of “the National Top Ten Teas”. In 2004, it was honored as “the King of Green Tea” at the International Tea Exposition.
Huangshan Maofeng: This tea was already well-known in the Qing Dynasty. In 1955, it was selected as one of “ the National Top Ten Teas”. It was chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the national gift tea in 1986.
Qimen Black Tea: The earliest production dates back to 1875. At the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, Qimen Black Tea won a gold medal. In 1987, at the 26th World Food Fair held in Brussels, this black tea won a gold medal. It is one of the three well-known high mountain black teas in the world.
